The model 66 was the first shotgun I ever owned. It was a Christmas present when I was 11. This one was a 20 ga with a 28 in mod.

The lever only opened the barrel. Mine didn't have an ejecter only extractor. You had to cock the hammer just like on most single barrels. It had no recoil pad and kicked me around pretty good. It didn't matter much to me 'cause it was my first and I didn't know any better.

Ithaca also made a single shot 22 at the same time, but I don't remeber the model #.Proud parent of a USMC Gunny! My Marine kicked cancer's a$$! I got one of these little babies in.410 when I was 12.

I am now 48 and still use it. It works great on rabbit and squirrel. I knocked the front bead off the first time out. I replaced it and broke it off right away.

Since then it has had no front bead. It shoots great and is light as a feather, great to carry all day. It is a great beginners shotgun since it doesn't kick like a mule. I have taken my son out with it and I plan to hand it down to him. I think my Dad payed $35 for it new in the box. This may not be an ornate gun but it is very utile. I hope to keep it in the family for generations to come. I have an Ithaca model 66 super single. 12 gauge 3 inch chamber rifle sights. It was my first deer gun,and the best shooting smooth bore slug gun I have ever shot. This gun is a great beginner gun,it teaches a hunter to make the first shot count. I was very quick on a second shot when I carried this gun regularly, but learned to make one shot count. For a beginner a smaller gauge would be better, I have never shot a 3 inch shell out of this little gun but the regular 2 3/4 inch shot shell or slug kicks pretty good. The muzzle raises alot even when holding the gun solidly on your shoulder kinda like a high caliber pistol. The short barrel on this gun makes it easy to carry and a good brush gun. It comes up fast and points easily.Happy shooting to all.

Bumping this thread up again. I just picked up a 20ga M66 with a 28' bbl, but I'm having trouble identifying the choke restriction. I saw a thread where folks mentioned that it should be stamped on the left side of the barrel just above the side of the receiver, but all I have there is a number '4' stamped in that spot.Does the '4' indicate choke or is there somewhere else I should look? One other question: Ideally, I'd like to cut this stock down about 2' and add a 1' recoil pad to make the gun more comfortable for my wife. I'd never do this to a classic shotgun, but is this considered OK with a M66, or would I be committing a sin? Thanks for any help!/edit - oops.

In yet another thread I saw that the '4' indicates a Full choke for other Ithaca models. Does that hold true for the M66 as well?' I have it's twin.As to putting a pad on it, eh? These do command very good prices for a single shot, I don't know that I'd alter it much.

Since its a light single shot, even adding a pad isn't going to take all the kick out of it.I do know that according to the folks at Ithaca, they WILL NOT bring back these old single shots, so there won't be any more made, period. That's something to think about before you get the hack saw out.“There are things in the old Book which I may not be able to explain, but I fully accept it as the infallible word of God, and receive its teachings as inspired by the Holy Spirit.”Robert E. Thanks again. Always helps to get someone else's perspective when you're about to do something stupid!' I don't think it'd be a sin to do so at all, it just depends. If you bought it to be used, if it isn't in mint collector state, etc.

Then do what you will with it to make it useful if that's what you want to do.Now if it was a mint first year model 37T it would be a different story mind you. Personally I'd leave it alone and get the wife something else.
